How to Use This Character Counter
Type or paste your text into the input box above. The counter updates instantly as you type — no need to click anything. You get a full breakdown of characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time.
The platform limits section below the stats shows how your text fits within the character limits of popular social media platforms and SEO fields. Green means you are within the limit, yellow means you are approaching it, and red means you have exceeded it.
Use the copy button to copy your text to the clipboard, or the clear button to start fresh.
Why Character Count Matters for Social Media and SEO
Every social media platform enforces character limits. Exceeding them means your text gets cut off or rejected entirely. An X/Twitter post is limited to 280 characters, while an Instagram bio caps at 150. Getting your message across within these constraints is a skill — and this tool helps you practice it before you hit publish.
For SEO, character limits are equally important. Google typically displays the first 60 characters of your meta title and 160 characters of your meta description in search results. Text beyond those limits gets truncated with an ellipsis, which can hurt your click-through rate.
Word count matters too. Blog posts under 300 words rarely rank in search. Long-form content (1,200+ words) tends to perform better for competitive keywords. The reading time estimate helps you gauge whether your content matches the depth your audience expects.
All processing happens locally in your browser — your text is never sent to any server. This tool is completely free, with no login required.
